Rubik's Cube

Where should I go to get a great cube?

There are several different types of cubes out there, for the 3x3 cube (pictured above) there are several options: you could buy a normal store Rubik's cube, you could buy a Rubik's brand DIY (Do it yourself) cube, or you could buy a cube from this website. (If you don't know what DIY stands for visit my page on acronyms

Store bought Rubik's cubes

If you are just starting out with 'cubing, you probably own a store bought Rubik's cube. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, everyone started somewhere, and even a store bought cube can be made fantastic with a little work.

Store bought Rubik's cubes are worse than Ebay "cubes" (The name "Rubik" is copyrighted so most of the Ebay cubes are called "intellectual cubes") only because store bought Rubik's cubes don't have adjustable springs like DIY's do. I will go into that further down the page. Store bought Rubik's cubes can be lubricated so that they turn much better. (check out my page on lubrication for help with that.)

Rubik's brand D.I.Y. cubes

While I myself have never purchased a Rubik's Brand DIY cube I have not heard many good things about them. I have heard that they possess a major flaw and that the center caps repeatedly fall off. (If you didn't know, DIY cubes have a center cap for adjusting the tension on the inner springs, that is why they work so well, but if you can't keep the cap on your Rubik's cube during solving...well you see the problem.)

Ebay bought cubes

Cubes from Ebay are the cubes of all cubes. The most reputable dealers are both Chinese dealers, and they are (suprisingly) located in China! The only drawback of getting a DIY cube is the wait, if you go for the typical shipping it can take 4 to 6 WEEKS MINIMUM to recieve your cube, and that is obviously a pretty long time. The Ebay DIY's are of extremely high quality and look exactly like a conventional Rubik's cube (although the cube itself does come in several different colors.) Almost all cubes from Ebay are DIY's simply because DIY's are quality cubes and Ebay is where 'cubers normally go to purchase them

Types of DIY's

Type A These are the best, they turn significantly better than a Rubik's cube and look exactly the same.

Type C These are pretty good, they turn a bit faster than a Rubik's cube and look identical.

Type B The worst, these turn about as good or worse than a typical store bought Rubik's cube

I am not quite sure what makes a certain cube a certain type, but type A is the best, B is the worst.

(Nope, those aren't typos, A is best, C is second best, and B is worst, don't ask why, because we don't know)

Well, that's it, hopefully you liked my little guide on cubes!
